What you receive

A translation built to be checked

Your translation is compared line by line with your passport and other documents, so it has to be complete and exact.

  • Every field translated, including the notes recorded on the certificate.
  • Names exactly as on the certificate, in the same spelling and order.
  • The translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, showing who translated it and their NAATI credential.
  • Our letterhead with our address and telephone number, so the translation can be traced back to us.

When Home Affairs asks for one

Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country where you lived for at least 12 months in the past 10 years since you turned 16. Some visas, such as the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), ask for them when you apply. Certificates are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

What Home Affairs asks

The Strafregisterbescheinigung

Home Affairs' instructions for Austria name the Criminal Record Certificate (Strafregisterbescheinigung). Apply through an Austrian embassy or consulate, or online if you have ID Austria.

Check first

You may not need a translation

Austria issues a certificate with no convictions in German and English. If yours lists convictions, it is in German only and needs a full certified translation.

In person

Once, or through a lawyer

Home Affairs says you must appear in person at least once, when you apply or when you collect it, unless a lawyer represents you. The Austrian Embassy in Canberra charges a consular fee.

What Home Affairs asks of a translation

From the Department of Home Affairs' guidance on documents in languages other than English:

  • Provide the original document together with the English translation.
  • In Australia, use a translator accredited by NAATI.
  • Include the translator's full name, address and telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language, all in English.

Our certified translations carry the translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, on our letterhead with our address and telephone number.

What to send us
  • The official certificate as a PDF, or a clear colour scan where every line is readable.
  • Every page in one file, including the apostille if there is one.
  • Any spelling your names must match on your passport, written in the comments box.
  • The certificate as a PDF or colour scan, including every page that lists convictions.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a translation if my certificate is bilingual?

A certificate with no convictions is issued in German and English. Home Affairs asks for translations of documents that are not in English, so check what your application asks for; if any part is in German only, we translate it.

My name is spelled differently on my passport. What happens?

A certified translation reproduces names exactly as they are written on the certificate. If your passport shows a different spelling or order, mention it in the comments when you order so we can discuss it with you before translation starts.

How long does the translation take?

The typical turnaround for a police certificate is 24 to 48 hours. An urgent option is available when you order.

Does my Austrian police certificate need an apostille?

Home Affairs' instructions for Austria do not mention an apostille. If another authority asks for one, Austria's Foreign Ministry (BMEIA) issues electronic apostilles for certificates from the police directorates. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
