Typically within 24–48 hours, ready to upload with your application. Add a printed copy by post if you need one.

What you receive

A translation built to be checked

Your translation is compared line by line with your passport and other documents, so it has to be complete and exact.

  • Every field translated, including the notes recorded on the certificate.
  • Names exactly as on the certificate, in the same spelling and order.
  • The translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, showing who translated it and their NAATI credential.
  • Our letterhead with our address and telephone number, so the translation can be traced back to us.

What Australian authorities ask for

Choose your country below for a step-by-step guide to getting the right certificate from Australia.

gavel

Home Affairs and the Australian Passport Office

Home Affairs asks for the original document together with an English translation; in Australia the translator should be NAATI accredited. For citizenship, Home Affairs asks for a full birth certificate. The Australian Passport Office asks for documents not in English to be translated in full.

Full certificate

Not a short extract

For citizenship, Home Affairs asks for a full birth certificate. In Germany a certified extract of the birth register (beglaubigter Registerausdruck) also shows later entries such as name changes.

Original + translation

Send both

Home Affairs asks for the original document as well as the English translation. Keep a clear colour scan of the original ready to upload with your translation.

International version

Check before you skip a translation

All three countries issue multilingual international certificates. No Australian government rule we have found exempts them from translation.

What Home Affairs asks of a translation

From the Department of Home Affairs' guidance on documents in languages other than English:

  • Provide the original document together with the English translation.
  • In Australia, use a translator accredited by NAATI.
  • Include the translator's full name, address and telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language, all in English.

Our certified translations carry the translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, on our letterhead with our address and telephone number.

What to send us
  • The official certificate as a PDF, or a clear colour scan where every line is readable.
  • Every page in one file, including the apostille if there is one.
  • Any spelling your names must match on your passport, written in the comments box.
  • If your certificate was issued online, the PDF exactly as downloaded.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

My name is spelled differently on my passport. What happens?

A certified translation reproduces names exactly as they are written on the certificate. If your passport shows a different spelling or order, mention it in the comments when you order so we can discuss it with you before translation starts.

How long does the translation take?

The typical turnaround for a birth certificate is 24 to 48 hours. An urgent option is available when you order.

Do I need an apostille on my birth certificate?

Home Affairs' evidence guidance asks for the original document and an English translation and does not ask for an apostille. Another authority may ask for one; our country guides explain who issues it in each country. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
