Typically within 24–48 hours, ready to upload with your application. Add a printed copy by post if you need one.

What you receive

A translation built to be checked

Your translation is compared line by line with your passport and other documents, so it has to be complete and exact.

  • Every field translated, including the notes recorded on the certificate.
  • Names exactly as on the certificate, in the same spelling and order.
  • The translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, showing who translated it and their NAATI credential.
  • Our letterhead with our address and telephone number, so the translation can be traced back to us.

Before you order

Getting your Geburtsurkunde from Australia

You can do all of this from Australia.

Where to order

Any Standesamt

Austria keeps a central civil status register, so a birth certificate can be requested at any registry office. Austrian embassies and consulates abroad can also issue one if the birth is already in the central register.

Online

With ID Austria

With ID Austria you can get an electronic register extract free of charge through the digital document service.

International version

Multilingual certificate

Germany, Austria and Switzerland also issue an international (multilingual) version under the CIEC conventions. Home Affairs asks for an English translation of documents not in English and publishes no exception for these, so check what your application asks for.

What Home Affairs asks of a translation

From the Department of Home Affairs' guidance on documents in languages other than English:

  • Provide the original document together with the English translation.
  • In Australia, use a translator accredited by NAATI.
  • Include the translator's full name, address and telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language, all in English.

Our certified translations carry the translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, on our letterhead with our address and telephone number.

What to send us
  • The official certificate as a PDF, or a clear colour scan where every line is readable.
  • Every page in one file, including the apostille if there is one.
  • Any spelling your names must match on your passport, written in the comments box.
  • Every page of the certificate, including any notes added later and any apostille.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

My name is spelled differently on my passport. What happens?

A certified translation reproduces names exactly as they are written on the certificate. If your passport shows a different spelling or order, mention it in the comments when you order so we can discuss it with you before translation starts.

How long does the translation take?

The typical turnaround for a birth certificate is 24 to 48 hours. An urgent option is available when you order.

Do I need an apostille on my Austrian birth certificate?

Home Affairs' evidence guidance asks for the original document and an English translation, not an apostille. If another authority asks for one, the Austrian Embassy in Canberra lists the Foreign Ministry, the provincial governments and the first-instance civil courts; embassies can apostille certificates they issued themselves. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
