What you receive

A translation built to be checked

Your translation is compared line by line with your passport and other documents, so it has to be complete and exact.

  • Every field translated, including the notes recorded on the certificate.
  • Names exactly as on the certificate, in the same spelling and order.
  • The translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, showing who translated it and their NAATI credential.
  • Our letterhead with our address and telephone number, so the translation can be traced back to us.

How Australia treats an overseas marriage

An overseas marriage cannot be registered in Australia, so your foreign certificate and its translation are the record you use here.

Partner visas and recognition

For partner visas (820/801 and 309/100), Home Affairs asks married applicants for the marriage certificate or other evidence that the marriage is valid in Australia, with the original and an English translation; translators in Australia must be NAATI accredited. The Attorney-General's Department says an overseas marriage is generally recognised if it was valid where it took place and would have been valid in Australia.

Not registrable

Keep the foreign certificate

Overseas marriages cannot be registered in Australia. Your country's certificate, with an English translation, is the document you use for visas and other applications.

Name change

Not automatic

Victoria's registry says that if you married overseas you cannot take your spouse's family name automatically: you apply to change your name. The Passport Office also needs a name change certificate in some cases.

Check before you skip a translation

Germany, Austria and Switzerland issue multilingual international marriage certificates. No Australian government rule we have found exempts them from translation.

What Home Affairs asks of a translation

From the Department of Home Affairs' guidance on documents in languages other than English:

  • Provide the original document together with the English translation.
  • In Australia, use a translator accredited by NAATI.
  • Include the translator's full name, address and telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language, all in English.

Our certified translations carry the translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, on our letterhead with our address and telephone number.

What to send us
  • The official certificate as a PDF, or a clear colour scan where every line is readable.
  • Every page in one file, including the apostille if there is one.
  • Any spelling your names must match on your passport, written in the comments box.
  • Every page of the certificate, including notes added later and any apostille.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

My name is spelled differently on my passport. What happens?

A certified translation reproduces names exactly as they are written on the certificate. If your passport shows a different spelling or order, mention it in the comments when you order so we can discuss it with you before translation starts.

How long does the translation take?

The typical turnaround for a standard document is 24 to 48 hours. An urgent option is available when you order.

Does my marriage certificate need an apostille?

Home Affairs' partner visa pages ask for the original and an English translation, not an apostille. The Passport Office says foreign certificates must be legalised when it accepts them for a name change. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
