Typically within 24–48 hours, ready to upload with your application. Add a printed copy by post if you need one.

What you receive

A translation built to be checked

Your translation is compared line by line with your passport and other documents, so it has to be complete and exact.

  • Every field translated, including the notes recorded on the document.
  • Names exactly as on the document, in the same spelling and order.
  • The translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, showing who translated it and their NAATI credential.
  • Our letterhead with our address and telephone number, so the translation can be traced back to us.

What each application asks for

Citizenship and the Australian passport each have their own wording on translations. Here it is, from the official pages.

Citizenship and passport rules

For citizenship by conferral, Home Affairs says translators in Australia should be NAATI accredited; for citizenship by descent it says they must be. The Australian Passport Office asks for documents not in English to be translated in full and stamped by an accredited translator, and says the translated documents can be used again for future passport applications.

Full birth certificate

For both citizenship routes

Home Affairs asks for a full birth certificate, by conferral and by descent. Order the full certificate from the registry office where the birth was registered, not a short extract.

Name changes

Link your names

If your name has changed, Home Affairs accepts an official marriage or divorce certificate, or a name change certificate, as the link between your current and previous names. Each needs its own translation.

Passport

Reuse your translations

The Passport Office says translated documents can be used again for future passport applications. Born overseas? It asks for your foreign birth certificate translated into English, or another document showing your sex and place of birth.

What Home Affairs asks of a translation

From the Department of Home Affairs' guidance on documents in languages other than English:

  • Provide the original document together with the English translation.
  • In Australia, use a translator accredited by NAATI.
  • Include the translator's full name, address and telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language, all in English.

Our certified translations carry the translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, on our letterhead with our address and telephone number.

What to send us
  • The official document as a PDF, or a clear colour scan where every line is readable.
  • Every page in one file, including the apostille if there is one.
  • Any spelling your names must match on your passport, written in the comments box.
  • If your name has changed, the marriage, divorce or name change document that links your names.
