What you receive

A translation built to be checked

Your translation is compared line by line with your passport and other documents, so it has to be complete and exact.

  • Every field translated, including the notes recorded on the certificate.
  • Names exactly as on the certificate, in the same spelling and order.
  • The translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, showing who translated it and their NAATI credential.
  • Our letterhead with our address and telephone number, so the translation can be traced back to us.

Getting your Strafregisterauszug from Australia

You can do all of this from Australia.

When Home Affairs asks for one

Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country where you lived for at least 12 months in the past 10 years since you turned 16. Some visas, such as the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), ask for them when you apply. Certificates are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

What Home Affairs asks

The Strafregisterauszug

Home Affairs' instructions for Switzerland name the Criminal Records Extract (Strafregisterauszug) issued by the Federal Office of Justice.

How to order

Online, then by post

Order it on the Federal Office of Justice's website, then print, sign and post the form with a copy of your passport or ID card. It costs CHF 17; the office says processing takes about two working weeks from when the signed form is posted.

Language

English labels are optional

You choose German, French or Italian as the main language and can add English for the labels. Any entries appear in the main language only, so the content still needs translating.

What Home Affairs asks of a translation

From the Department of Home Affairs' guidance on documents in languages other than English:

  • Provide the original document together with the English translation.
  • In Australia, use a translator accredited by NAATI.
  • Include the translator's full name, address and telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language, all in English.

Our certified translations carry the translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, on our letterhead with our address and telephone number.

What to send us
  • The official certificate as a PDF, or a clear colour scan where every line is readable.
  • Every page in one file, including the apostille if there is one.
  • Any spelling your names must match on your passport, written in the comments box.
  • The paper extract scanned in colour; a digitally signed extract exactly as received.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

My name is spelled differently on my passport. What happens?

A certified translation reproduces names exactly as they are written on the certificate. If your passport shows a different spelling or order, mention it in the comments when you order so we can discuss it with you before translation starts.

How long does the translation take?

The typical turnaround for a police certificate is 24 to 48 hours. An urgent option is available when you order.

Does my Swiss police certificate need an apostille?

Home Affairs' instructions for Switzerland do not mention an apostille. The Federal Office of Justice can have a paper extract legalised for a foreign authority for CHF 20 when you order; digitally signed extracts cannot be legalised. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
