Send the PDF, a scan or a clear photo. If your passport spells a name differently, tell us in the comments.

  2. translate

    A NAATI translator translates it

Every field is translated, including notes recorded on the licence and any apostille.

  3. mark_email_read

    Receive your certified PDF

Typically within 24–48 hours, ready to upload with your application. Add a printed copy by post if you need one.

What you receive

A translation built to be checked

Your translation is compared line by line with your passport and other documents, so it has to be complete and exact.

  • Every field translated, including the notes recorded on the licence.
  • Names exactly as on the licence, in the same spelling and order.
  • The translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, showing who translated it and their NAATI credential.
  • Our letterhead with our address and telephone number, so the translation can be traced back to us.

What to know about your Austrian licence

You can do all of this from Australia.

gavel

Your state decides

Visitors in every state can drive on a current overseas licence, carrying an English translation or an International Driving Permit where the state asks for one. Converting to an Australian licence is different: Transport for NSW only accepts translations from Multicultural NSW or the Department of Home Affairs (plus the Korean and Taipei offices for their own licences), so a private NAATI translation, including ours, is not accepted for a NSW conversion. Victoria, Queensland, the ACT, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania accept NAATI translators for a conversion. The NT asks for an “authorised translator”; check with the NT Motor Vehicle Registry first.

Recognised

No tests to convert

Germany, Austria and Switzerland are recognised countries in every state and territory. With a current car licence you can convert without a knowledge test or a driving test. Translation rules still differ by state.

Old licence?

Valid until 2033

Austria now issues only card licences. Paper and card licences issued before 19 January 2013 stay valid until 19 January 2033, when they must be exchanged for a current card.

Digital licence

Valid only in Austria

Austria's digital licence in the eAusweise app is valid only in Austria, is available only in German, and needs the physical card. Bring the card and its translation.

What Home Affairs asks of a translation

From the Department of Home Affairs' guidance on documents in languages other than English:

  • Provide the original document together with the English translation.
  • In Australia, use a translator accredited by NAATI.
  • Include the translator's full name, address and telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language, all in English.

Our certified translations carry the translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, on our letterhead with our address and telephone number.

What to send us
  • The official licence as a PDF, or a clear colour scan where every line is readable.
  • Every page in one file, including the apostille if there is one.
  • Any spelling your names must match on your passport, written in the comments box.
  • Both sides of the licence, in one file.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I use your translation to convert my licence in NSW?

No. Transport for NSW only accepts translations from Multicultural NSW or the Department of Home Affairs. Our translation can be carried while you drive as a visitor, and is accepted for conversions in Victoria, Queensland, the ACT, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania.

My licence has some English on it. Do I still need a translation?

Western Australia says a licence written in two languages, English and another, still needs an English translation. EU and Swiss card licences are mostly in the national language, so translate both sides.

What about an International Driving Permit?

In Austria the International Driving Permit is issued by the motoring associations ARBÖ, ÖAMTC and VCÖ, and is valid only together with your national licence. Some states accept an International Driving Permit instead of a translation while you visit; for a conversion, a translation is what they ask for.

My name is spelled differently on my passport. What happens?

A certified translation reproduces names exactly as they are written on the licence. If your passport shows a different spelling or order, mention it in the comments when you order so we can discuss it with you before translation starts.

How long does the translation take?

The typical turnaround for a driver's licence is 24 to 48 hours. An urgent option is available when you order.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
